About Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park, though Tanzania's smallest mainland park, packs remarkable diversity into its compact size. Located just 25km from Arusha town, it serves as an accessible introduction to Tanzania's wildlife or a perfect day-trip destination for those with limited time.
Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,566 meters, dominates the park's landscape. This spectacular volcano offers serious trekking opportunities, with climbers rewarded by stunning views of Kilimanjaro and the park's crater below. The 3-4 day trek provides excellent acclimatization for subsequent Kilimanjaro attempts.
The park's diverse habitats - montane forest, Momella Lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and alpine meadows - support varied wildlife despite the small area. Black and white colobus monkeys thrive in the forests, while the lakes attract thousands of flamingos when conditions suit. Giraffes, buffalo, and zebras graze the grasslands.
Arusha National Park permits walking safaris throughout, offering rare opportunities to explore on foot with armed rangers. Canoeing on Momella Lakes provides yet another perspective. This diversity of activities within easy reach of Arusha makes the park ideal for short stays.
